The Law of Marriage

Shall we have more than one wife? Shall we neglect the Law of our Lord? God forbid, for if we cannot be satisfied by one wife how could we possibly be satisfied by two?

Mat 5:28 Jesus said; "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

What then is adultery, physically speaking?
Violation of the marriage bed; a crime, or a civil injury, which introduces, or may introduce, into a family, a spurious offspring. (Webster.)

When we violate the marriage vows we commit two sins, The first is fornication and the second adultery. Many say that the laws of the old testament allowed multiple marriages and even concubines, but people must remember that the Old Testament laws were 1. For the Jewish house of Israel and 2, the law was fulfilled and was given back to men in the law of mercy under Jesus Christ.

Mat 22:24-30; We see here that Jesus never condemed the law, for it was just. Each husband of the woman had died. "Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

And last of all the woman died also.
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."

This is further applied in the New Testament in, 1Co 7:39, The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

Matthew Henry states of this; "Second marriages are not unlawful, so that it is kept in mind, to marry in the Lord. In our choice of relations, and change of conditions, we should always be guided by the fear of God, and the laws of God, and act in dependence on the providence of God. Change of condition ought only to be made after careful consideration, and on probable grounds, that it will be to advantage in our spiritual concerns."

1Pe 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
The key word here is, "honour".
Respecting the wife is important for a successful marriage, and like wise respect for the husband.

A man that will bring in another woman(wife) dishonors his wife. The prayers of that man become void, and his relationship with God will terminate, for he has committed adultery and fornication. He has lied to the Lord and has forgotten his promise to obey the commandments of Christ. Can this sin be forgiven? Yes, but only if the man or woman, return to the right way and asked forgiveness of the Lord.

Tit 1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
The key words here are, "the husband of one wife".
Many times in scripture we see reference to this, concerning not only the lay person but as requisites to hold office within the church. We can't over write these laws, for then shall we not be as the unbelievers?

This is spoken of here;
Tit 1:15-16; Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Mat 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
Mat 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Fornication, The incontinence or lewdness of unmarried persons, male or female; also, the criminal conversation of a married man with an unmarried woman.
Adultery. Mat 5.
Incest. 1 Cor 5.
Want of restraint of the sexual appetite; free or illegal indulgence of lust; lewdness; used of either sex, but appropriately of the male sex. Incontinence in men is the same as unchastity in women.(Web.)

Many will bring up these verses to argue over remarriage, lets read and understand. 1Co 7:10-11; And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

These verses are applied to those that depart or divorce under other conditions except fornication or adultery. This may even happen to Christians at times when passion or unruliness happens. This is stating that if a man or woman depart from each other they are to try to reconcile to each other. Remember that an unbeliever is not bound by the Law of God for they are in the flesh and not in the spirit. The Bible calls this under a carnal mind.

Proof? Yes, as it is written;
Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Also, 1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

Rom 2:11-15; For there is no respect of persons with God.
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Are we then under the Law of God, or under a law within ourselves. Have we accepted laws that are man made, have we rejected the Laws of Mercy and Grace to hold to fornication and adultery? For if we are yet carnal we are under no law except heathenism. Ars.
