Has your room become your own personal dumping ground for everything in the house that doesn't have a place? Approaching the veritable mountain range in your bedroom can seem like a daunting task. Follow these simple guidelines to make it fast, easy and maybe even fun.
First, make your bed. Your bed is the epicenter of your room. Completing this first task is easy and makes a big difference. Plus, you've now got a big surface area to organize your work.

Next, take everything out of your bedroom that does not belong in there. Use laundry baskets to haul off everything that you do not want to be in your room anymore. Go around the house finding places to put all of these little troublemakers. Don't spend too much time out of the bedroom if you want to stay on task. If you're married, now is the perfect time to get your spouse to help carry the load.
Get rid of all the trash and take out all of the dirty laundry. Delegating chores like laundry is a good idea if you have the resources and want to get done quickly. Now take everything else from the floor that doesn't belong there and vacuum the floor. Creating another large clean space is great motivation to keep going.
Now comes the tricky part. Getting rid of out of date clothing, shoes, and linens is vital. Do you have some old comforters that you'll never use again? These are the number one space stealers. Old worn out shoes, shoes that hurt and ones that are dreadfully out of date need to be tossed! Stuff clothes that you haven't worn in forever directly into garbage bags and give them to charity. Don't think too hard or you'll end up putting them right back on the hangers. I try to go quickly and make a rule that if it's questionable, it goes.
Invest in some nice uniform hangers that will make the remaining clothes hang nicely and look organized. A shoe rack keeps shoes neat and out of a heap in your closet. Canvas shelves that hang with Velcro from your closet rod are wonderful for storing purses, belts and other items that can junk up your closet or dressers. Create storage for blankets, out of season clothing and clothes that you hope to squeeze into again by utilizing space bags and large shallow containers under your bed. Need more space? Order some bed blocks to raise your bed and create even more space.
Get rid of old knick-knacks and clean off those dressers and end tables. Make them off-limits for laundry and stacks of mail. Put a big laundry hamper where you normally get undressed and use it.
If you have a closet door where you can mount a shoe rack, then you can clear out the bottom of your closet for hampers. One good idea is to put two hampers in your closet. One is for dark clothes and one is for light. When one is full, it gets washed. You won't have to sort, and most hampers hold about exactly one load. Have fun and enjoy your breathing room!
