Pyramid Head from the video game Silent Hill 2 has remained the Silent Hill series' iconic monster. This is most probably due to the originality of the monster as well as the complex psychological implications of it. While there are quite a few good attempts at analysis around, there are some implications that seem to have been missed. Herein, the significance and complexity of the monsters will be explored.

Pyramid Head serves as a manifestation of what Jung would call the Shadow Archetype. This is basically the repressed negative aspects of every human being and in Silent Hill represents the repressed negative aspects of James Sunderland 1. To represent James Sunderland's Shadow Archetype, the monster draws upon a relatively wide selection of concepts.

In terms of its appearance, it first draws upon the image of an executioner from the medieval ages. As Executioners are almost exclusively male and associated with oppressive, masculine laws, the monster represents James Sunderland's oppressive masculinity. It also represents how James essentially 'executed' his wife.

Pyramid Head also has a secondary representation associated with oppressive masculinity by having a clearly phallic appearance. This is both in terms of its general appearance; with its head essentially representing the glans of male anatomy, as well as the weapons it uses all being long, stabbing weapons of some kind or another. It is no mistake that James eventually comes to wield Pyramid Head's blade, which is effective against anything that has experienced oppressive masculinity such as Eddie.

Near the end Silent Hill 2, James must essentially fight two Pyramid Heads. This is because he has murdered, or believes he has murdered, two people. Thus, when defeated, one of the monsters has a rusted sphere, representing the murder of Mary, and one has a crimson sphere, representing the murder of Eddie.

Using candles in these rooms is also fun. Make sure they are placed in sand in case they are left unattended, but they can add atmosphere to the room. Teens can learn to tend to candles and they love the atmosphere they give off. Also adding fun lighting can also be done with low expense. A cool lava lamp or one with a wild shade to match the décor can add a lot of style to the room. Having fun at a low expense and the teen can have a room they love to spend time in. What more could you ask for, but for them to want to stay home.

For best results, search out slight gradients of no more then 7%. A stepper gradient will slow down you pace too much and you will hit a point of diminishing returns.

Adding just one hill training session per week can do wonders for your stamina and sprinting ability. When running up hills, you are strengthening the same muscles in your leg muscles that are responsible for fast sprinting. Running against the force of gravity builds strength, which will make you a powerful and fast runner on any gradient. It also help improve your VO2max, (the volume of oxygen your body can obtain at maximum heart rate), which helps your body use oxygen more efficiently and allows you to maintain a relaxed and natural form while running at a faster pace than you would normally.

How to do it

Find a hill about 100 - 400 meters in distance and no more than 7% gradient. It helps psychologically if you can see the top of the hill from the bottom. Run up the hill at 80% your maximum heart rate. Lift your knees higher and pump your arms more than you would normally to gain momentum and power. Remember, you should be working hard here. Run as many repetitions as you can manage but at least 2 and generally about 5 then recover in between by jogging back down the hill. Rest at the top of the hill if you need to.

Creating a Space Themed Bedroom

One of the most popular bedroom themes, particularly for a boy, is a Space theme. In the past you would have been limited to sticking a few space shuttle pictures on the wall and some of those glow in the dark stars on the ceiling but now it is possible to be really creative.

If you have some artistic talent you could consider adding some hand-painted murals to the walls using pictures from books or photographs from the internet. If you haven't the ability to draw the outlines free-hand you can hire a projector quite cheaply and enlarge the images onto the walls and then paint them with water-based acrylic paints. If you really wanted to be creative you could use daytime visible glow paints. These are colours that you can see during the day and which then glow when the room is dark. This really makes a space theme come to life. The range of colours is a bit limited but there are enough to enable you to create some fantastic murals.

If the thought of hand-painting a mural fills you with dread you can now buy full wall murals that depict just about any type of theme you can imagine. There are some absolutely stunning space murals ranging from the space shuttle through to planets and fantasy space designs. These murals are attached to walls in exactly the same way as you would hang ordinary wallpaper. They normally come in 6-8 pieces and you just have to centre it up on the wall, paste the pieces and hang them. If the mural is slightly larger than your bedroom wall you can simply trim them to fit.

You could simply buy space themed wallpaper. There are some super designs available and some that even incorporate glow in the dark planets and rockets. A fourth option is to paint your walls and then buy space stick-ups or transfers.

You can add accessories to the walls such as space clocks, paintings, prints, posters, light switch covers etc. If you have a young child who would get many years use out of a themed bed/bunk bed then there are some amazing space related designs such as the Space Shuttle, a Launch Pad, rocket and even a Star Wars shuttle.

If you don't want to go to the extent of spending a lot of money on a designer bed you can still buy space themed bedding plus matching curtains and light
fittings.

You can accessorise the rest of the bedroom with glow in the dark planets/solar systems that hang from the ceiling or planetariums that project space images onto the walls and ceiling. There are lunar loungers, cyborg chairs, stellar shelving and many more gizmos to add to the overall space theme.

As a final touch why not consider a Cosmic Star Ceiling. You can create stars, planets, constellations, shooting stars and more using glow in the dark paints. If you paint on a white or light coloured ceiling you will not see any of the effects as the glow paint dries to a white colour. The paints charge up during the day and then at night when the room is in darkness the effects come to life. It really does make you feel as though you are staring up into space. Children love them particularly if they are scared of the dark.
